The Road – Opening Title Sequence

Put together as part of my MA, my brief was to create an opening and closing title sequence for a movie using Adobe After Effects. I chose the movie, The Road (See sequence below).

The most important part of the brief was to capture the mood of the movie and to ensure that the sequence would dovetail seamlessly into the start of the film. The goal of any movie title sequence is to set the audience up for what is to follow — to use all at your disposal (images, sound and effects) to put them in the head-space or mood for what is about to follow. Perhaps the best examples of this (and two that greatly inspired me in terms of this project) are Kyle Cooper’s sequence for Se7en and Wayne Fitzgerald’s sequence for The Dead Zone. Everything about them is near flawless, particularly their choice of music and how this integrates with the images. They both successfully create a mood of expectancy for what is to follow.

Adobe After Effects is an industry standard software in the TV and Movie industry. It is used to create motion graphics — special effects, if you like. Just about every TV advert you watch, every television Ident (remember those Channel 4 floating cars/ buildings to create a ‘4’) or CGI movie you go to in the cinema uses it. It is a very powerful and very cool tool. Best of all, it creates realistic effects

In this sequence, the rain, the rain drops on the camera, the sun going down, the sun-beams, the fog, the clouds moving, the birds flying across the screen and the fire and smoke by the river are all fake. I created them all from scratch using After Effects. I also used Adobe Premiere Pro (similar to Final Cut) to edit video footage I shot.

So how could my skills in this area be useful to the media industry or for your needs? Well with audio and video ever more popular with users on websites, legacy media will have to adapt when it comes to their websites. I can create simple or complex Ident ads with the company’s logo to run before each video is loaded, similar to what RTE currently do.

I also have the skills to shoot and edit audio and video packages quickly, which can be rolled out on websites, mobiles or iPads. I have all of the necessary software packages and am capable of creating videos using After Effects or Premiere Pro on request.
