Great article by Mick Heaney on why Other Voices makes for poor music television in today’s Times. Have to say, I agree with him. The initial novelty of the Dingle church venue has worn off and was more suited to the hushed singer-songwriters (Damien Rice, etc) it featured in it’s opening series.
No doubt, actually being there is a fantastic experience but as television, it’s become rather dull, predictable and jaded. Recent series have seen the show at it’s best when it leaves the church for living room or shop performances and perhaps the show could be reinvigorated by a change of venue or format. Heaney’s point about Jools Holland is very valid. Lord knows how many years on, but Holland’s show still remains probably the best music show on television.
