Ever since their hugely influential debut, The Strokes have been pretty so-so. I’ve liked their subsequent albums, quite a lot actually, but they’ve never threatened to make that great leap forward. Despite the talents of the various other members, Julian Casablancas has also driven the outfit and his solo record is pretty damn great – and not as different to The Strokes as some have alluded to. It would be great if some of the sounds conjured up here were to bleed into the next Strokes record. It’s unlikely however. They do though really need a strong record next time out. At least Casablancas can close the decade safe in the knowledge that he still possesses one of the greatest surnames in rock.
